The Amazon Logistics Center in Frankenthal, Rheinland-Pfalz, is home to one of the largest rooftop solar projects in Europe. Installed in 2016, the 4 MWp photovoltaic system features approximately 15,000 solar panels and was developed in collaboration with Avantag Energy s.à.r.l., AMATEC GmbH, and the local public utility company. This innovative project stands out as a unique shared ownership initiative, allowing citizens to invest directly in the energy transition.

For the time being, the system operates on a full feed-in basis, as on-site consumption for commercial buildings of this scale requires specific regulations. However, the project was designed with in-house solar power usage in mind, ensuring that the logistics center can eventually cover a large portion of its energy needs with renewable electricity. Given the extensive space available in logistics centers, projects like this offer cost-effective construction and a strong business case for energy-intensive operations, similar to those in the manufacturing industry.
